Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
They had not bottled the 2020 Ultreia Saint Jacques yet and were still waiting for the labels (and they label the day after they bottle), so I caught an unbottled sample that was very tender and fruit-driven, primary and quite open. He used more stems and full clusters in 2020, and since 2018, they have removed the percentage of white grapes that used to be included in the wine. It’s a little more Mediterranean, with aromatic herbs and a more powerful palate. There will be some 120,000 bottles from 2020.

Description
Ultreia Saint Jacques is a red wine made from Mencía grapes by the Raúl Pérez winery in the Bierzo DO.
It is a wine made from grapes coming from vineyards planted on clay-limestone soils.
These are family vineyards planted 50 years ago and onwards, located in the village of Valtuille de Abajo, which are crossed by the Camino de Santiago.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand. Once the grapes reach the winery, they are fermented in oak barrels with a capacity of 3,000 to 5,000 litres, without temperature control. Subsequently, it is aged in old used French oak vats. It is not filtered or clarified.
Taste
Ultreia Saint Jacques is a red wine with fruity aromas and hints of minerality, which also surprisingly shows the varietal character and style of the Valtuille vineyards.
It is an exuberant wine, with a lot of volume. On the palate it is direct, round and appetising, fluid in the mouth with excellent integrated acidity.
A red wine conceived as a tribute to life by its creator Raúl Pérez.
The word ultreia is of Latin origin. This is how the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago greeted each other, and it means forward. This is the origin of one of the most popular and appreciated wine collections of the Raúl Pérez winery in the D.O. Bierzo, of which this magnificent wine is a part.
Ultreia Saint Jacques is a red wine to be enjoyed with dishes such as bluefin tuna belly, meat and vegetable lasagne, matanza with fried eggs and hot pots.
And you, have you already tasted this fantastic wine from Bodega y Viñedos Raúl Pérez in D.O. Bierzo? Tell us about it!
